Policy Area (PA) ‘Nutri’ aims at reducing nutrient inputs to the sea to acceptable levels.
Almost the entire open Baltic Sea is eutrophied leading to oxygen depletion, reduced water clarity, an increase in filamentous algae, summer blooms of cyanobacteria and undesirable changes in species composition. Some main challenges across the macro-regions are conflicting policy targets of environmental and agricultural policies, varying levels of commitment to achieve policy targets, high-level political commitment and low awareness of costs and benefits and coordination efforts.
The Policy Area formulates the following goals:
· to reduce nutrients by putting in place measures agreed in HELCOMs Baltic Sea Action Plan
· the recovery of the Baltic Sea to a good environmental status.
PA Nutri actions therefore concentrate on promoting measures and practices that support nutrient recycling and reduce nutrient losses, as well as on promoting cost-efficient nutrient removal and sustainable sludge handling in waste-water treatment. Dialogue among all sectors, reliable nutrient load data, cooperation with non-EU Member States and investigation on cost-efficient nutrient reduction mechanisms are required in order to meet the set targets.
PA Nutri is coordinated by Finland and Poland.
